‘Chemo Chic’ Celebrity Style Guide

15/02/2011

Follow on from Diary of a Chemo Girl: My Hair, My Life

So maybe you are preparing for chemo, or perhaps like these celebrities you know that super short hairdo’s can also be super sexy. Here are a few stylish examples to inspire you…

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

If you have lost or are losing your hair and wigs aren’t your thing (or maybe you just want to try something a little different) play around with some stylish headscarves. Throw on some old Hollywood glamour like Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly. Or have a little fun with more funky fashions à la Nicole Ritchie, Lindsay Lohan, Lauren Conrad or Alicia Keys.

Designers like Prada, Juicy Couture, Gucci– and of course Pucci and Hermes- have all used the classic silk scarf as inspiration for their Spring 2010 lines, demonstrating that this is one fashion staple that will never go out of style.

My tip: For an instant update on retro glamour, simply add over-sized shades to brightly coloured or bold print headscarves.

Nicole Richie

Don’t make your headscarf an after-thought; work it into your outfit as a fashion statement in its own right. Here, Nicole Richie shows us three ways to wear the same red scarf:

By pairing a bold headscarf with neutral basics, you can give a boring outfit a splash of star style. For a light, bright feel, stick to the never-out-of-style jeans and white t-shirt combo adding a splash of vibrancy that will be sure to lift your spirits. The simple clothes provide the perfect canvas on which to display fun accessories that emphasize your personality.

My tip: chunky, statement, metallic jewelery.

For a taste of bohemian, summer elegance, you only have to look to Marni’s s/s 2010 collection which is filled with casually tied headscarves and large, vintage earrings, made from a mixture of chunky beads, crystals, and even shells.

My tip: don’t take it all too seriously- have fun with your look.

Finally, for a more elegant, evening look, think soft fabrics and luxurious drapes with clean lines. Keep it simple, like Stana Katic, and instead use smoky, dramatic make-up to emphasise your eyes and bone structure.

Or maybe you have realised what fashionistas Kiera Knightly, Jessica Alba and Hilary Duff have known for years- hair or no hair, perfect wig or bad hair day… a hat can be a girl’s best friend. You think they are trying to HIDE from the paparazzi? Looking that chic and eye-catching? Please…

Blake Lively - Sun Hat

Jessica Alba - Wide Brimmed Felt Fedora

Kim Kardashian - Floppy Sun Hat

Taylor Swift - Beanie

Try a Fedora style like Jessica Alba with a chunky sweater and large earrings, or a summery sun hat like Kim Kardashian and Blake Lively. This looks great with floaty dresses and bright colours. Alternatively, the Beanie – a la Taylor Swift- is brilliant for winter as you can get it in a variety of materials and colours.

My tip: Wear the Fedora in felt, over a brightly coloured silk scarf. To really make a statement, or to acheive a more glamorous look, accessorize with a vintage brooch that will absolutely make your evening sparkle.

Love this – Being glamorous does not have to stop when one goes through chemo. As a woman who started losing my hair at age 16, I believe strongly in the ACS’s Look Good, Feel Better program. Sometimes a pretty headcovering, a little lipstick or gloss, and a touch of blush can make you feel almost yourself again.

Don’t know if this is appropriate, but I write a blog about women’s hair loss (I just started it) called “Alopecia Musings”. Thanks! Linda Rieschel. Blog: headwrapguru.blogspot.com.

May I simply just say what a comfort to discover a person that actually knows what they are discussing online.
You certainly realize how to bring an issue to light and make
it important. More people have to read this and understand this side of the story.
It’s surprising you are not more popular because
    you definitely have the gift.
